myth of suburbia

once
there was a corner of the yard
well-groomed and swept
and the tree's acorns fell
in neat rows     at least
to the acorns
but it was a mess
and the acorns kept falling
here and there     ploop
ploop     what they fell into
already twice-removed
once
there was a scrubby patch of dirt
the tree plooping it up
maybe tomorrow concrete
tomatoes
in neat rows     neat at least
to those
who'll die here

i used to listen to the ploop of acorns on a windy night because i knew the next morning i'd be out there shoveling them into a paperbag for my nana who ate them for some reason
